A company called WowWee has developed a robotic dragonfly that flies by flapping its wings. This toy was unveiled at CES 2007.

The only ones available from eBay today were about $54... and the sad part was, the price was $14 and the shipping was $40.

Mini RC helicopters -- fully functional -- were quite a bit cheaper once you figured in the shipping.

It's really pathetic when ebay sellers do that.

By the way: If you search Google you can find some hacks for these, e.g., longer flight duration, making them lighter, and so on.

I've seen them for sell for about $50 in US Radio Shack stores...

Thanks for the tip. I went down and bought one at Radio Shack.

The first one I bought had a problem. It would "fly", but rarely had the power to climb at all. Even though it would "porpoise" at times -- as though it were climbing too steeply then stalling -- the flight almost invariably tended downward. I call that gliding, not flying. There is a difference.

I have exchanged it for a new one. I have not really tried to fly it yet except for a day that was too windy, so I am hoping that the new one is an improvement. If so, I will try to remember to return here and report.
