Freezing Substances By Boiling
While it may seem counter-intuitive, liquids require heat to boil and, if you create the right conditions, one liquid can be boiled in order to freeze a second.

This experiment is taking place under a vacuum. In this experiment the water in an acetone/water mixture can freeze when the acetone starts boiling.

The heat from the room temperature water is enough to cause the acetone to boil, when applied to a vacuum. Boiling point is the point at which vapor pressure exceeds atmospheric pressure. The vacuum allows manipulation of the acetone boiling point (the greater the vacuum, the lower the boiling point). Since the heat energy from the water was used to heat the acetone to the point of evaporation, the water turned to ice. Chemistry is cool!
