Centralia - Unstoppable Coal Fire Destroys Town
In 1962 Centralia was a prosperous mining town in Pennsylvania. Now, it is practically a ghost town after a controlled fire wound up catching a coal vein, spreading the blaze under the town.

After an attempt at burning garbage lead to a massive underground coal fire (reaching 1,000 degrees), residents of Centralia Pennsylvania had little choice but to evacuate the city. Now the ground is warping and collapsing into the burning coal pits, and clouds of toxic (and sometimes radioactive) smoke waft up from the Earth.
